In Pays-d’Enhaut, in the heart of the Vaudois Alps, Château-d’Oex is blessed with a climate which has earned it the title of the hot air balloon capital. The resort hosts the Festival International de Ballons while the entertaining Balloon Museum in the centre of the village tells the story of balloonists.
The Balloon Museum is housed in the former Town Hall, a historic building in the heart of the village, with an area entirely given over to fun activities, services and practical questions related to ballooning. There is also a shop for visitors.
On the upper floor, an exhibition area with the latest in multimedia equipment tells visitors all about the history, invention, technology and adventures of hot air ballooning. Nothing is left out in depicting the wonderful world of balloonists.
Near the hot air balloon launch site, visitors can admire the capsule of the
Breitling Orbiter’s first attempt to circumnavigate the world. The third attempt in 1999 was successfully completed by Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones, both well-known in the resort.
