Ants are always a fascinating subject for children as well as adults, and the Ant Trail in Château-d’Oex, in the Vaudois Alps, is all about these busy, organised insects. Easy to get to by car or on the GoldenPass train from Montreux, Château-d’Oex and its mountains offer a whole host of activities for the whole family.
The Ant Trail starts at the top of the Château-d’Oex chair lift and ends at the middle station. It begins with an exhibition about ants and continues with information boards dotted along the path through forests and mountain pastures. Children have a fantastic opportunity to observe the giant anthills which abound in these forests.
This educational trail was created with the collaboration of the Lausanne Zoology Museum which is engaged in various research projects on ants such as an inventory of species of wood ants, analysis of the habitat of field ants, reproduction strategies or interactions between species of Galapagos ants.
A little bonus: lifts are free for children under 9.
