The Museum of the Pays-d’Enhaut
Founded in 1922, this museum has become one of the principal museums in Switzerland displaying traditional folk art. Visitors will be awed as they wander through rooms complete with furniture, tools, objects and decoration from the past. The tour is a literal ‘step back in time’ to imagine what life ‘used to’ be like. There is also a magnificent display of traditional ‘cutting’ art otherwise known as ‘découpage.’
For the past 80 years this museum has dedicated itself to searching for objects which were used by local residents over the course of the years. There is lovely painted, wooden furniture, sculptures, statues, military paraphernalia, cow bells and skis from all from the XIV century. These objects are proudly displayed throughout fifteen individual rooms.
The museum has also recreated rooms which depict the life of blacksmiths, alpine cheese-makers, country kitchens and a bread oven which dates back to 1665. Other rooms take you into the heart of noble families with a dining room display and biscuit irons dating from 1581.
One can also enjoy the numerous drawings, photos and paintings which represent life in this area many years ago.
The exceptional display of cutting art, otherwise known as, decoupage, boasts more than sixty works including those created by Hans Jakob Hauswirth (1809-1871) and Louis Saugy (1871-1953).
